Thirty three young artists from across Asia came together for Mapping Asia, a special project of CIGE (China International Gallery Exposition) 2009, Beijing’s annual premier art fair. From April 16 to 19, three contemporary Pinoys, Lirio Salvador, Kiko Escora, and Marina Cruz, held solo shows in conjunction with this event.
Marina’s works continue with her series of recording reminiscences through memorable spaces. This time, she uses her own family
residence in Bulacan, the dwelling in whose bosom her parents and beloved grandmother raised her, creating life experiences that provide fertile ground for her art.
For a time she left this house to study and to work. But now she has returned, this time with husband, artist Rodel Tapaya. They built a studio in the grounds, and once again, she calls this place home. She views the house now with the eyes of an adult. Her paintings capture the nostalgia and fondness she feels, be it for an old wooden armoire, or a ceiling made low by repeated renovations, or even the feeling of walking through salt beds that flood with the tide.
