In a matriarchal society such as ours, grandmothers hold particularly beloved positions. Joey Cobcobo witnessed how becoming Lola transformed his own mother, and the unique and special bond she forged with his kids. He started interviewing grandmothers in 2010, documenting insights into their relationships with their grandchildren. Two years ago, he exhibited the fruits of his research in his solo show, Lola 101.
Currently running at Avellana Art Gallery, Lola 101 Part 2 presents more of his conversations with grandmothers, 46 more of them to be exact. This completes his goal of speaking to 101 women, lolas all. After each interview, then as now, Joey engraved portraits of these women on large leaves then printed his impressions onto fabric. Lace crocheted by his mother frames each piece of cloth. The works hang all over the gallery, a jaunty, heartwarming celebration of family love.
From here, the show travels to Baguio, to the Bencab Museum.
Lola 101 Part 2 runs from 8 to 30 September 2012 at Avellana Art Gallery, 2680 FB Harrison St., Pasay City. Phone (632) 833-8357 or visit https://www.facebook.com/pages/AVELLANA-ART-GALLERY/
