Eugenia Alcaide Draws With Thread at Art Informal

By Eugenia Alcaide

When I first saw Eugenia Alcaide’s portraits, they stood stacked on the grass, newly unpacked, ready for the bustle of this year’s Art In The Park.  The next time I looked, perhaps two hours later, they had disappeared, carted off by those entranced with the novelty of her work.

When I heard that Art Informal had lined up Ginny for a solo exhibit, I wondered how the 28 year-old would fare when she completely took over a space.  The answer to that?  Even better than expected!

The title of her first one-man show, Thread, comes from the medium that Ginny has chosen to work with.  As she did with those portraits for Art In The Park, Ginny captures her subjects by sewing their impressions on silk screens, the gossamer fabric used mainly for transferring images in ink.  Fine black strands stretch tautly or fall into tendrils, outlining features in place of pen or pencil.

Ginny arrays the screens in a particular order so that her needlework is glimpsed through the translucent cloth, and each image is carried across the multiple layers of silk—a three-dimensional sketch.  Her subjects appear like holograms; the images shift depending on which angle one views them from. Ginny framed each of her portraits in white, and hanging as they are on bright white walls, there is a clean, fresh feel to her show.

With almost forty pieces of varied sizes, viewers will find much to enjoy.  After the warm reception accorded by the gallery’s patrons, I asked Ginny what she wanted to do next.  With a coy smile she answered, “You’ll see!”

Thread runs from 19 July to 4 August 2012 at Art Informal, 277 Connecticut St., Greenhills East, Mandaluyong City.  Phone (632) 7258518 or visit www.artinformal.com or https://www.facebook.com/Artinformal

  1. Hi! I moved to Manila/Alabang a couple of months ago and have been looking for a school to study jewelry making/silver smithing ever since without any luck. Do you know where I can find such a school? Thanks!
